Ultrasound Guided Injections in Stratford, East London
Ultrasound Guided Injections
We’re excited to offer Ultrasound Guided Injections (USGI) at FIX, delivered by a highly experienced Physiotherapist with specialist training in diagnostic ultrasound and guided injection techniques.
This service allows our team to offer even more comprehensive care under one roof. Our clinicians can now refer patients in-house for a consultation and, if suitable, an ultrasound-guided injection, all carried out here at FIX.
What is an Ultrasound Guided Injection?
Ultrasound Guided Injections use real-time ultrasound imaging to accurately guide a needle to the precise area needing treatment, typically a joint, tendon, bursa, or other soft tissue. This ensures that medications such as corticosteroids, local anaesthetics, or hyaluronic acid are delivered exactly where they’re needed.
Ultrasound guidance improves the accuracy, safety, and effectiveness of the procedure, giving you the best chance of pain relief and recovery.

Ultrasound and Injection Service
This service combines targeted ultrasound imaging with precision-guided injections for optimal results – essentially a one-stop pathway where assessment, scan, and injection can be completed in a single visit.
Ultrasound-guided injections provide targeted treatment for painful joints, tendons, and soft tissue conditions. Using real-time imaging, we deliver medication precisely where it’s needed – improving accuracy, comfort, and results.
We offer the following types of injections:
- Corticosteroid injections – to reduce inflammation and pain in conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, or tendinopathy
- Hyaluronic acid (viscosupplementation) – to support joint lubrication and comfort, particularly for knee and shoulder arthritis
- Hydrodistension for frozen shoulder – a specialised injection technique using saline, steroid, and local anaesthetic to stretch the shoulder capsule and improve range of motion
Commonly treated conditions include:
- Shoulder pain (rotator cuff injury, bursitis, frozen shoulder)
- Elbow pain (tennis or golfer’s elbow)
- Hip and groin pain
- Knee osteoarthritis or meniscal irritation
- Foot and ankle pain (Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis)
- Hand and wrist pain (De Quervain’s, trigger finger, carpal tunnel)
All injections are performed by experienced clinicians using high-resolution ultrasound to ensure safety, precision, and comfort.
Why this approach is ideal:
- Rapid diagnosis and immediate treatment when appropriate
- Reduced need for multiple visits
- Streamlined patient journey and faster recovery
- Clear guidance on rehabilitation or further treatment options
Please note we do not offer spinal scans or spinal injections.
* Please note: in order to ensure excellent service the injection appointment is only bookable after an initial telephone consultation or consultation and scan.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do you inject?
We most commonly use corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and pain, hyaluronic acid to lubricate and cushion joints (especially in degenerative conditions), saline for hydrodistension procedures, and local anaesthetic (usually 1% lidocaine). Patients are always fully informed about the options, benefits, and potential risks before proceeding.
How long until I feel better?
- Steroid injections: often take effect within 10 days, with relief lasting 6 weeks to 6 months.
- Hyaluronic acid: may take 1–4 weeks to work, with relief lasting several months.
- Occasionally, injection therapy may not provide benefit at all. Your clinician will give a realistic timeline based on your condition.
Are injections painful?
Most patients report only mild discomfort — a quick pinch or pressure. Ultrasound guidance improves accuracy and comfort. Some people may experience soreness for a few days afterward, which can usually be managed with cold compresses or simple analgesia.
How many injections can you have in one joint?
Many clinicians recommend no more than three injections per joint per year, spaced at least 12 weeks apart. Your clinician will assess risk versus benefit for your individual case.
What are the risks and side effects?
Possible risks include temporary post-injection flare (24–48 hours), skin changes around the injection site, infection (rare), elevated blood sugar in diabetic patients, and weakening of soft tissues with frequent steroid use. All precautions are taken to minimise risk, and potential side effects will be discussed beforehand.
Will I need rest after the injection?
Yes — usually a brief period of relative rest (24–48 hours) is advised. Gradual return to normal activity should follow your rehabilitation plan.
Can I drive after the injection?
Often yes, but it depends on the treated area and how you feel. For upper limb injections (shoulder, elbow, hand/wrist), driving is usually safe once you’re comfortable moving the arm. For lower limb injections (hip, knee, foot/ankle), we generally advise arranging transport, as local anaesthetic or temporary discomfort may affect mobility and safety.
