Did you know that up to 12 % of the population experience problems and symptoms related to the jaw? The anatomical name for the jaw joint is the temporomandibular joint (or TMJ) These physical complaints range from mild pain, or perhaps the occasional clicking sounds during jaw movement, or jaw deviations and malocclusions (teeth starting to not ‘sit’ quite right.
However, issues with the jaw can develop into more serious problems, such as difficulties opening the mouth, jaw locking, or excessive clenching (Bruxism). The medical lingo for the jaw-related dysfunctions is Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) or, less frequently, Craniomandibular disorders (CMD).
Recent studies have shed light on the theory that symptoms from further afield, such as facial pain, neck pain, headaches, difficulty swallowing, tinnitus, idiopathic tooth pain (meaning tooth pain with no clear local underlying cause) or even some types of eye pain can have their root-cause in jaw disorders. Often the TMJ is overlooked as a root cause of issues, but the good news is many problems can be successfully treated with specialist physical therapy.
The medical reason is that the human skull forms the socket of the jaw which is exposed to extreme forces when we chew or bite. If this complex interaction between jaw, disc and skull is disturbed problems appear.
