AMY MOFFAT TALKS ABOUT SHOULDER IMPINGEMENT AND HOW PILATES CAN HELP SHOULDER PAIN.
Shoulder pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints, along with back and neck pain, for the general population. At any given time, 20% of us may experience pain related to the shoulder, with 25% of people reporting previous episodes. This stat highlights just how important proper management, in the form of strength and conditioning exercises, is to avoid the recurrence of pain.
Our shoulder joint, aka the glenohumeral joint, is structurally a ball-and-socket joint and it ranks as the most mobile joint of the body. This great range of motion allows for so many wonderful movements, but it also means it’s more prone to injury.
How can Pilates help with shoulder pain?
In controlled studies, Clinical Pilates has proven to be an efficient technique for patients experiencing shoulder pain, as it helps reduce pain and disability. In Pilates we can use a variety of exercises to improve shoulder blade (scapula) control, rotator cuff strength, increase thoracic mobility which when limited can impact congruency of the glenohumeral joint, enhance head, neck and shoulder alignment and introduce weight-bearing exercises in a safe and controlled environment to improve the overall function of the shoulder.
At Fix East Village, we have a wide range of equipment to provide assistance and resistance as we rehab and challenge the shoulders, and surrounding structures, towards better stability and mobility so that our daily activities and the sports we love, are no longer a source of pain or frustration.
